The Advantages of Solar Power

No doubt you have been hearing about solar energy for some time now. And no doubt you must be seeing more and more rooftops of bungalows having solar panels. You must be wondering why people are going for solar. What precisely do they get out of it, especially when the upfront cost runs into hundreds and thousands of rupees? What is the attraction? Well, there are a number of benefits which are mentioned below.

50% to 80% reduction in electricity bill

Your Home Solar Power System can meet most of your electricity needs. This means your need for grid electricity will be massively reduced. Exactly how much you will save depends on your usage pattern and the size of your solar system. Generally, savings vary from 50% to 80%. It is possible to make your home 100% solar-powered but in most cases, it may not be cost-effective.

Future-Proofing your electricity expenses

Inflation has become a permanent part of our life. The way prices have increased in the past 10 years or so, it is expected that they will continue to increase into the foreseeable future. If you install Solar Power System in your house you would largely save yourself from the inevitable rise in electricity prices.

Earning from your solar energy system

Whether you can earn or not from your home solar depends on the policies of your electricity supplier. There are two ways you can earn from your system. One is called ‘Feed-in-Tariff’ while the other is called Net Metering.

In Feed-in-Tariff the electricity company simply buys your excess electricity at its own rate and pays you for that.

In Net Metering you really do not earn anything but can save on your battery cost. Basically, during daylight, you supply the electricity to the company. At night you can take it back. This way you can do without having a battery backup for nighttime or dark heavily cloudy days. Net metering is mandated by the Government of Pakistan. So your power company is duty-bound to provide you net metering, but Feed-in-Tariff is not mandated. So your power company may or may not provide this facility.

Increase in your house’s sale value

One amazing advantage of your home solar system is that it increases the value of your house! Yes, that’s right. Even if you sell your house just after installing the system your house will give you a sale price several percentage points above its regular value.

Affordable cost of installation

There are few things in life whose cost comes down over a period of time. Solar Power is one of the rare exceptions. Internationally speaking, the cost of solar panels has come down by 70% during the past decade. In Pakistan, due to the fall in the value of the Rupee, the cost reduction may not be that high but it is still substantial.

Hardly any maintenance cost

Maintenance is not something you associate with Solar Panels. Cleaning once a month or once quarterly is all you need. The frequency will depend on how dusty your area is. The truth of the matter is after the installation cost there is very little maintenance cost. But the sustained supply of free electricity!

Long term savings

Once you have installed the system you have done nearly all of your expenses for the next twenty years! This is because maintenance cost is negligible. The life of the system is normally between 25 to 30 years. In other words, spend once, and then reap the benefits for the next thirty years! What more could you ask for?

Clean, renewable energy

The massive use of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal is wounding our environment like a knife wounds our body. When you install a solar power system in your house you are helping to heal these wounds. This is because solar panels emit no harmful gasses like carbon, nitrous oxide etc. And you will never run out of the sun. In other words, Solar is clean, green and renewable.
